Miami Dade College, besides being the largest college in the USA, has eight unique campuses educating students from around the world. Its population of 174,000 students and over 300 areas of study make it a colorful and diverse institution of higher education. Opening in 1960 as a junior college, Miami Dade served as the first integrated institution of higher learning in the state of Florida. Small classes and one-on-one attention, in spite of the large student population, is a unique feature of the college. Students can choose to take evening and weekend classes or even one of 90 different accredited online courses offered by the Virtual College. The Virtual College allows students to interact on an intellectual level, from the comfort and ease of their own homes.
The Honors College at Miami Dade offers alternative classes for academically-gifted students, desiring more rigorous coursework and even more one-on-one instruction. Offered to over 500 incoming scholars each year, admission in the Honors College requires a 3.7 GPA, 1200 combined SAT score, or 26 enhanced ACT score. Students who qualify for the program enjoy an enriched curriculum, travel and leadership opportunities, and the chance to receive scholarships. After receiving an Associate’s degree from Miami Dade, Honors College graduates may go on to complete their Baccalaureate degrees at some of the nation’s top universities.
Besides offering degree programs, the school also holds vocational training at North Campus. Opportunities are offered for future police officers, firefighters, and emergency personnel to acquire knowledge and certification in their chosen fields. The Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center also offers non-accredited employment preparation in the form of workshops and seminars, offering programs to fit diverse educational needs.
Studying abroad is an important part of a well-rounded education, and Miami Dade offers students their choice of over 30 countries in which to study and explore. Programs range from short-term to as long as an entire semester and take place in some of the world’s most fascinating cities. Students can gain cultural experiences, meet new people, and develop their language skills while also working towards college credits.
The Miami Dade Sharks are a key part of campus life. The teams have been successful in many state and national championships for decades. There is also men’s basketball and baseball and women’s basketball, volleyball, and softball offered. Athletics on campus offer students the chance to build lasting relationships, while acquiring skills that will help them in life outside the playing field.
